beginning with building blocks

Assignment Number One: Castle Sometimes it's hard to think innovatively when the prompt is something as iconic as 'CASTLE'. I had ideas of what tools I was interested to work with - extending out shapes vertically and lofting and capping them to make solids. The 'grid snap' was appealing as it caters to my rectilinear tendencies. The results led me to my solution. I worked without the grid-snap. I made cubes and boxes out of the solid tool (rather than lofting the forms). a triangle more than three times

As I mentioned in my last post quilts are another interest of mine. Often when I'm trying to work out how a quilt pattern has been generated I begin to recognize a repeat of triangles building the pattern. I began to play with this in Rhino a little bit to see where it would lead and quickly realized that perhaps I need to return to high school geometry to make the repeats seamless. the repeat that followed came as a surprise. Sadly a center rotation of the diamond failed to yeild a good result. another triangle play - this time with a half-drop

explosion for the sake of knowledge

the idea of an explosion often brings the idea of destruction to mind. The object I choose to be the subject of this project may indeed be destroyed, but the digital three dimensional dissection of it will be the result of the experiment. in thinking about objects that would be interesting to consider I began looking around at what was close at hand. I work on an old drafting table with an articulated top that can rotate. It's too big to be used for this project. Needless to say it would also be hard to take apart the object you need to work on while working on the project to take apart the desk. my next object is a potential contender this is the basic IKEA desk light. I have had some version of this light as a part of my workspace since I was a teenager. I enjoy the simplicity of the articulated elbows. I am intrigued by how the springs may be rendered in Rhino.
